Excellent piece, Nathan. David Graeber in DEBT… also speaks of 'debt' and 'sin' as similar concepts. He writes of the (I think) the blood debt as a precursor of money, as if Joe cuts off Tom's nose, Tom's family demands recompense from Joe's family. Handily, these are all codified!

Spot on, as usual, Tedder!

Graeber wrote about "wergild", the Germanic/Anglo-Saxon legal custom of requiring a murderer or injurer to pay monetary compensation to the victim’s family or lord. The word means "man-price" (wer "man" + geld "payment"). This system prevented blood feuds by assigning a monetary value to a person’s life.

aye, unfortunately not. It is dengue so we have to wait things to take their course now. This will be her 5th night in hospital, my wife stays in with her. She’s back on IV again.
