Hecate and the burning of women as witches made me think of Barbara Ehrenreich and Dierdre English's book, Witches, Midwives & Nurses: A History of Women Healers. The authors discuss how the Church and the patriarchy attacked the wise women who were herbalists, healers, as well as midwives. They also helped women with contraception and abortion, all in all a major threat to the Men of the time.
Tedder, this is not the first I've heard about this book. Perhaps it was you who has mentioned it before? At any rate, I just added it to my Google Books library and I'm excited to see just how the authors attack this subject!

The book is barely more than a pamphlet, perhaps a two hour read, and well worth the time.
